Prep Readiness Assessment
Evaluating speech and language skills for a successful start to school.
What is 'prep readiness’?
Prep readiness refers to the readiness of a child to enter their first year (prep) of school with confidence and competence in their speech and language skills.
A child’s prep readiness encompasses their ability to communicate effectively, understand and use language appropriately in social contexts, and demonstrate age-appropriate articulation and language abilities. Assessing prep readiness through comprehensive screening evaluations, such as our School Readiness Assessment, helps parents determine if their child is meeting important speech and language milestones necessary for a successful transition into school.
Speech and language milestones for a child entering prep include:
clear articulation
age-appropriate vocabulary use
grammatically correct sentences
good listening comprehension
effective social language skills
basic narrative abilities
fluent speech
appropriate voice quality
Assessing these milestones with a School Readiness Assessment helps identify strengths and areas requiring support to ensure children are well-prepared for classroom communication and social interactions.
Prep Readiness Assessment at Ready Steady Speech
At Ready Steady Speech, Madi offers prep readiness screening assessments for children aged 4-5.
Children aged 4-5
Ready Steady Speech offers a Prep Readiness screening Assessment, ideal for parents seeking to gauge their child's speech and language development before starting school.
This assessment consists of two screening tools: the Fisher-Atkins Articulation Survey and the Renfrew Action Picture Test, focusing on articulation and language skills. Additionally, pragmatics (social language), voice, and fluency are also assessed to provide a holistic view of your child's communication abilities.
During a one-hour session, Madi will observe and evaluate these areas, ensuring a thorough assessment of your child's readiness for school in terms of communication. A summary report, summarising results and recommendations, is provided within 10 business days.
This assessment is beneficial for parents uncertain about their child's speech and language milestones, or who want assurance that their child is prepared for school. It helps identify any areas needing further support or intervention. Importantly, there's no obligation to continue with therapy sessions after the assessment.
